A Meta-Analysis on Factors Related to the Counselor¡¯ Countertransference Management Abilities

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to comprehensively analyze the correlation effect size between counselors¡¯ countertransference management abilities and factors affectig the counselors¡¯ countertransference management ability, by means of meta-analysis. 55 research studies were sampled. From these studies, the following results were derived. Firstly, the total effect size among the factors related to the counselors¡¯ countertransference management ability was .390. This reweals an effect size higher than the mid-range. Secondly, the correlation effect size on the variables related to counselors¡¯ countertransference management abilities¡¯ sub factors was competence as a counselor variables (.527), psychological and personality (.322), social support (.206) and counseling experience variables (.178). Thirdly, the correlation effect size on the variables related to the counselors¡¯ countertransference management abilities¡¯ sub factors was counselor development (.652), state anxiety (.593), counselor self-efficacy (.548), and authenticity (.523). The data from this study can be used in a practical manner for the development of counselors¡¯ countertransference management abilities through comprehensive analysis of individual studies on counselors¡¯ countertransference management abilities and effective intervention plans and action plans. It is also useful in suggesting possible future directions in subsequent research.
